Adobe offers video format for professionals
Known for its graphic and video software the company Adobe Systems today has made a proposal to create a new universal and open file format designed to store captured video.
The new format will differ from conventional recorded video files such as avi so that, firstly, the video will be in an uncompressed form, and secondly, audio tracks will appear as separate streams, and thirdly, it will comprise necessary editor’s meta-data, such as data for frames, finally, fourthly, the format should become universal for all video editing programs.
As you can guess, as the basis of the new format the company proposes to use its achievements and its views on the format created. However, in support of this point of view the company adduces arguments.
The basis of video format should be formed on the concept of so-called “digital negatives” (Digital Negative, DNG), which were first tested on the example of image photo files and software for color correction Adobe Lightroom.
In the case of graphics files the system Adobe DNG provided a unified format for storage and subsequent processing of images RAW, derived from professional cameras of different manufacturers.
Shooting using the RAW format has become very popular in digital photography, as it allows to obtain the maximum possible quality and provides the most complete control over image processing.
However, different RAW-formats are used in cameras today, the specification for which is usually unavailable, which means that not every RAW-file may be available for the processing of a program.
As a result, the use of some RAW-file formats for long-term (archival) storage carries some risk.
A similar situation is observed in systems with video – each manufacturer has its own file formats and its own approaches. Adobe is hoping that the format with the working title “CinemaDNG” should standardize approaches to video editing and creation software for installation.
The company said that, use CinemaDNG should facilitate the work with the video at any stage, whether it was the initial processing, editing, digitizing, recording, or distribution of video.
For support CinemaDNG, Adobe is in talks with professional video market extraweights like Panavision, Silicon Imaging, Dalsa, Weisscam and ARRI. In the nearest future the company will start negotiations with the developers of software.
“Adobe is helping to define the industry standard, which would be a win-win for the entire ecosystem of film production and professional video content.
The producers of films can easily switch from one equipment to another, and the producers of cameras will be able to very quickly introduce new features in their design, “- says Jim Girard, the vice president of media units Adobe.
